Resurrection is excited to present a Comme des Garçons brown “mud” dress from 2002, an evocative exploration of asymmetry, drape, and organic form.
Rendered in a deep, earthy brown with a subtle, almost weathered tonal variation, the dress reflects Rei Kawakubo’s fascination with imperfection and the beauty of the irregular. Cut in a fluid, elongated silhouette, the piece skims the body with an understated elegance, allowing the construction to take precedence over conventional tailoring.
An asymmetrical cascade of ruffles travels diagonally across the torso, beginning at the shoulder and folding into the body with a sculptural softness. This off-center draping disrupts the otherwise minimal form, creating tension between structure and movement—a signature of Kawakubo’s early 2000s work. The cap sleeve emerges organically from the drape, further emphasizing the garment’s deconstructed sensibility.
From the back, the dress reveals a quieter composition, where the fabric falls in long, uninterrupted lines, allowing the asymmetry to subtly echo rather than dominate. The result is a piece that feels both raw and refined, balancing restraint with conceptual depth.
A study in texture, form, and anti-symmetry, this dress embodies Comme des Garçons’ ongoing dialogue between the poetic and the unconventional.
