Resurrection is excited to offer a vintage Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière black jacket with tonal grey stripes and dramatic shearling trim. This striking piece brings together Ghesquière’s fascination with technical fabrics, graphic pattern, and exaggerated texture, creating a silhouette that feels simultaneously futuristic, romantic, and distinctly of his early Balenciaga era.
The jacket is constructed in black fabric with horizontal bands of varying-width grey stripes running throughout the body and sleeves. A dramatic border of plush, curly black shearling frames the open neckline and extends down the front edges, continuing around the hem and cuffs. The fitted silhouette is shaped through the waist, while the long sleeves are slightly elongated and finished with generous shearling-trimmed cuffs. The back is cleanly constructed with a center seam and continues the graphic horizontal stripe pattern, while the open-front construction allows the richly textured trim to remain the focal point.
Nicolas Ghesquière’s tenure at Balenciaga, beginning in 1997, was defined by a highly individual approach that combined traditional Balenciaga codes with technical experimentation, unexpected materials, and futuristic silhouettes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s archive includes a Ghesquière-era Balenciaga ensemble from Fall/Winter 2004–05 incorporating shearling, while contemporary accounts of the period identify this era as an important moment in the designer’s exploration of shearling alongside military and utilitarian references. Ghesquière’s early-2000s Balenciaga collections are now particularly represented within the fashion archive, with documented examples from the period including striped jackets and other highly distinctive constructions.
An exceptional Archive piece, this jacket showcases Ghesquière’s ability to transform familiar outerwear elements through unusual texture, proportion, and graphic treatment. The combination of black and grey stripes with the abundant curly shearling creates a dramatic contrast between sleek, graphic structure and organic volume. A particularly distinctive example of early-2000s Balenciaga, Carefully Curated by Resurrection as part of our luxury vintage collection.
