ICONIC GUN POWDER TOP
Condition : Excellent Vintage Condition

Issey Miyake and Cai Guo-Qiang 'gunpowder' print top from the Guest Artist, Series 4, 1998. The top is pleated polyester with an abstract gunpowder trail print and features an asymmetric neckline with points to shoulder and hem. This renowned Chinese artist produces these designs by detonating gun-powder charges onto the Issey Miyake pieces and leaving a residue of scorch marks and ash, reminiscent of traditional Chinese calligraphic ink drawings. In 1998 at the Foundation Cartier pour l'art Contemporain, Cai arranged Pleats Please dresses in the shape of a coiling dragon on the floor, sprinkled them with gunpowder and then detonated the charge. The resulting charred, scorched patterns on the clothes were then photographed and later printed onto Pleats Please pieces for commercial sale in 2000.
